What You Should be Aware of at the Nail Salon

Rest assured that the nail polish you’re using is free from toxins and other harmful chemicals.

I don’t know about you, but I think I got my first professional manicure when I was a senior in High School and my first professional pedicure after I graduated from college. Today I’m seeing the age for first manicures as young as three years old.

While it’s so much fun to watch a little girl beam with excitement as they get pampered, there are certain things we all should be aware of when it comes to our overall health, especially since the trend of weekly, or bi-weekly pampering is becoming more of a norm.

Have You Considered What Ingredients are in Nail Polish?

Did you know that when nail polish was first created in France in the 1920s, the glossy colors were formulated from an adapted version of the enamel used on cars? Yikes!!

Shortly after the Clean Beauty movement began to gain traction, we started to hear about “five-free” polishes. These nail polishes are free from 5 specific ingredients - formaldehyde, toluene, dibutyl phthalate, formaldehyde resin, and camphor. Studies have shown that these chemicals when inhaled or absorbed into the body, may have a negative impact on human health.

While many mainstream brands now have adopted the five-free formulation, if you’re unsure about what your salon’s polishes contain, you may want to consider taking your clean nail polish with you to the salon. This way, you can rest assured you are limiting your exposure to harmful chemicals.

Clean Isn’t Just about Ingredients

Bringing your own nail polish to the salon reduces the chance of infection. If salons are not properly sanitizing their nail polish bottles between customers, you could be putting yourself at risk of catching an infection. Bringing your own polish provides peace of mind that your manicure will be hygienic.

Top Quality

Taking your own nail polish to the salon allows you to use top-quality ‘non-toxic/clean’ brands. Some of the top brands I’ve used are Cote, Zoya, and Ella Mila. And if you have a little Diva who loves to be pampered, consider buying a few colors. Piggy Paint, which was developed with kids in mind.

All in all, taking your own clean nail polish to the salon is a great way to ensure a safe and hygienic manicure and a high-quality finish.

Perhaps best of all, if you take your own polish to the salon for your manicure, you will always have it on hand to fix those annoying chips!
